Opening a School-Age and Before or After School Program

Opening a School-Age program that provides Before and/or After- School care is a very different program from a licensed child care program according to Texas Health & Human Services Child Care Licensing. Let's first define a School-Age Program According to the Texas Human Resources Code.

School-Age Program:

1.) "Before-school or after-school program" means a child-care facility that provides care before or after, or before and after, the customary school day and during school holidays, for at least two hours a day, three days a week, to children who attend prekindergarten through grade six.

2.) "School-age program" means a child-care facility that provides supervision, along with recreation or skills instruction or training, and may provide transportation, before or after the customary school day, for at least two hours a day, three days a week, to children attending prekindergarten through grade six. A school-age program may also operate during school holidays, the summer period, or any other time when school is not in session.

There are many successful School-Age programs. Many new child care facility owners are considering whether to open a school age program only, or a full licensed child care program. These programs are responsible for caring for children who are birth - five years old. Some programs may also care for children to include school age children.
